Cockburn Connections August 2005 to June 2006

The Cockburn Connections project was funded through a DSC Recreation Tender and a City of Cockburn Grant in 2005.

23 people living in DSC accommodation in this area had an average age of 37 years and had limited or no structured day activity options. The aim of Cockburn Connections was to provide them with recreational opportunities through the arts in their local government region.

The outcomes of 99 workshops over 40 weeks were:

  • Increased recreation options and community participation for the target group.
  • Increased interaction between participants and other other members of their local community and recreation options for other community members to link into
  • Raised community awareness of the contributions of people with disabilities
  • Raised awareness of recreation needs of people with disabilities
  • 2 community arts events (The Kite Show at the Coogee Festival and Treasure Hunt at the Cockburn rotary Fair) and an exhibition at DADAA Inc celebrated the experiences of all the participants working on the project
  • Strategies for DSC support staff to sustain the links made with local government and community members.
